At The Border

A Meeting Place for Those Who Aren’t Afraid of the Border

Okay. Some of you will say I totally copped out on this. If so … start your own blog. I’m going to announce the winner(s) of the blog challenge.

drum roll

Everyone who posted a comment (over two sentences, that is) will get the bundle-o-Borderlands goodies.

Go ahead, you cynical critics, groan. Ask me, “What’s the point of posting a thoughtful comment if there’s no real contest? Why try for an A when everyone is going to get one?” I hear you and understand. If I was on the receiving end of this decision, I might just get so mad, I never bothered posting again.

Here’s the deal. I was honestly engaged and entertained by each post. And each post was, frankly, delicious in its own way. How in the world can I choose between a steak or a lobster, a strawberry shortcake or two scoops of Cold Stone’s best ice cream? Didn’t Jesus tell a parable about a guy who paid the 1-hour workers the same as the 8-hour workers?

Tony rocked it out with his assessment of commercial two (the process theology, pseudo-pantheistic, god is dead add). Mark, anytime you quote Ben Patterson, you’re going to win (and your own thoughts were piercing). Todd, you brought the loving honesty and intellectual rigor for which we all know and value you. Brick and Steve, your combo of earthy humor and bricky bluntness is worth every word!

So, send me your mailing address and I’ll send you the stuff!

MY PROMISE TO YOU: It’s not always gonna work this way. As in the past, we will declare a winner from the myriad of posts. This time…well, this time was different.

  1. Well, i don’t know if i can consider it a win if everybody gets something, but i’ll graciously except it nonetheless. I will sport whatever Borderlands flair with much pride.

I was reading (yes, even 40 iq’ers read) an article the other day. It posed an interesting question….what makes art “christian”? The article also went on to say that the Bible never uses Christian as an adjective (i’m going based on the article itself, i can neither confirm nor deny that statement) yet we do it all the time…Christian tv, Christian books etc. Got me thinking. Now my brain hurts. I think i need a nap or some lunch before i can continue on. What does anyone out there in Borderland Blog Country think about that statement?

  2. Deep indeed…is “Christian” an adjective? More so, are things that aren’t labeled as such non-Christian. Is anything outside of Christ?

The bible uses the word “Christian” in a labeling sense denoting those who believed in Christ. That’s the only way it’s used. But I don’t think that necessarily excludes the word from being used as an adjective.

But going back to the question…maybe the better question is “Can something not be Christian?” And here I think the answer is definitely yes. Much music in particular is not “good” in the Christ-like sense. A simple example would be Marilyn Manson, Britney Spears, or such people like that. But what about Beethoven? Or jazz instrumentals? Are those not Christian. I think they are good.

In the very broad sense, all good art, art that reflects the beauty of God, could be considered Christian. I don’t think it needs to blatantly proclaim the gospel to be “Christian”.

Christ is the beginning and the end of creation, the source of all good in the universe. All good things come from him. So all good things are Christian, I guess.

I am personally annoyed by Christian-themed stuff like amusement parks and some music. It seems hoaky. But that’s just me.

  3. solid points. i certainly don’t think there is a definitive answer on this to be honest. its something that could be danced around for hours and days. i don’t know if my legs can handle it.

i wonder where mr adam is in all this? I think we’ve talked about similar stuff back in the day.

my rebuttal to the statement all good things are Christian… pearl jam is good, jack johnson is good, are either of those ‘christian’? yes, they do have God give abilities that are being displayed whether they know it or not, but that doesn’t exclusively make it ‘christian’ since there is no glory to God given. and God isn’t being lifted up. I think this is one of Satan’s distortions of the true beauty of it all….making things not ‘good’ appear ‘good or okay’. i agree, it doesn’t have to say God or Jesus to be Christian.

you’re right, why are ‘christian themed’ things cheesy? it should be just the opposite.

hmmm. what to do what to do.

brick is tired from the rambling in me brain.
    over and out!
