At The Border

A Meeting Place for Those Who Aren’t Afraid of the Border

Greetings all. This is an older video, but maybe you haven’t seen it yet. Kind of skewers the whole idea of country-club Christianity. Reactions?

  1. Yeah, they put this up during a service at FOLC once. It is funny, but it also makes you think at the end. Is it all about me? Am I really attending church for God? Do I ask, “What’s in it for me?” when all is said and done.

  2. It is interesting that you bring this up. I just recently received email stating that Bill Hybels is now changing his mind about “Seeker Friendly Churches” of which he was a main architect. And I quote from the source given to me http://www.crosswalk.com/news/commentary/11558438/page2/
“We made a mistake. What we should have done when people crossed the line of faith and become Christians, we should have started telling people and teaching people that they have to take responsibility to become ‘self feeders.’ We should have gotten people, taught people, how to read their bible between services, how to do the spiritual practices much more aggressively on their own.”

A house built on a shaky foundation will fall. Even churches that were founded by the over flowing of the Holy Spirit and changed lives will fall if they do not remember their first love. It was Jesus who set us free for a purpose. Jesus never had a building program. Jesus set us free to once and for all operate as we were designed. To walk and talk with our God in the cool of the evening and to Love everything our God has made. The fruit of the Spirit is Love. The Bride of Christ will surely show the fruit of that great love and that is what attracts anyone.

  3. i thought alot about this one since seeing it on the site last week. I still don’t know how to say what i want to say.
i do agree that houses (ie churches in this case) built on shaky foundations will fall.
I’m afraid that many american churches over the past couple of years have decided to follow what appears to be a success at other churches (ie willow creek or saddleback). As with anything else like life or business, what works for one, may not work for another. If God and the Word was the focal point of what directions the church should go, maybe the church wouldn’t be backpeddling now?
Its a shame that church has been reduced to entertaining and putting on a show rather than empowering and equipping the saints. Its pretty hard to equip anyone with a 25 min “sermon” that is based on one scripture on a slide. Sounds like an empty gun if you ask me? I’d much rather have the fully loaded BIBLE from cover to cover as my ammo!
Based on recent church history, hopefully Hybel can write a book of how to change again? Yes, that was sarcastic and a low blow, but i do feel some truth to it.
I pray that the leadership and attendees of churches earnestly pray about God’s direction for them. This redirect to something deeper won’t be easy. Hopefully they are willing and determined to see it through.
HOpefully i wasn’t too harsh. God Bless!

  5. Hey Wes,
Dude, this is the place to speak your mind (in love, of course). Don’t worry. I didn’t think you came off too hard. Just a little spicey!

    Steve,
Very interesting article. i’m not sure what Willow is going to do about it. But you might find this blog entry interesting:

  6. Thanks Adam for the blog site. What caught my eye with the Willow article was they have figured out where they zigged when they should have zagged but it looks like they will get together to try to figure out the “new” approach???!!! It is pretty easy for me to know what to do although not so easy to do. Love your God wih all your heart, your mind, and your soul and love your neighbor as you love yourself. It is my sincere desire that the next time we meet you see more of God in my life and less of me.

  7. And by the way. Amen Brother Brick. Amen

  8. Sugarland Steve, i knew i liked you:-)
you hit it on the head too, its easy to know what to do, but to get the mind and then the body to follow through sometimes we get stuck in the fork in the road. i guess that’s a perfect reason why Jesus had to die on the cross for us. if it was left to our own doing, we wouldn’t be able to do it.

To all the Borderland peeps out there, if you get the chance, go see David Crowder*Band live. Just saw them roll through the Chi-town House of Blues a week or so ago and it was an absolute blessing and rockin’ time!
    peace amigos and happy thanksgiving
