Doctrine and Life

Paul told Timothy, “Watch your doctrine and your life closely.” In this class we will examine central Christian doctrines, drawn from Scripture and confessed throughout Church history, and examine how these doctrines impact our everyday lives. Have you ever wondered, “What is the practical use of theology?” or “Isn’t doctrine something for seminary students to worry about?” If so, then this class is for you! Come grow in your understanding of Christian belief and real-world application.

Session 01: Recovering Doctrine in the American Church
Take a look at any recent survey of American Christianity and you’ll discover something: Many Christians don’t really put much emphasis on the content of their beliefs. If you want to bore somebody, use the “D”-word–doctrine. Why is the so little passion for doctrine in our day, and why is this a problem? Are we missing something? In this session, we’ll explore these issues and questions, arguing that doctrine is not only important, but an exciting adventure!

Session 02: Creation: Setting the Stage (1 of 2)
What is the Christian doctrine of Creation and how is it unique? What does this doctrine teach us about God, the universe and humanity? How does the Christian understanding of Creation impact our view of life? In this session, we will discover how the doctrine of Creation has implications for the most pressing issues of our day.

Session 03: Creation: Setting the Stage (2 of 2)
What is the Christian doctrine of Creation and how is it unique? What does this doctrine teach us about God, the universe and humanity? How does the Christian understanding of Creation impact our view of life? In this session, we will discover how the doctrine of Creation has implications for the most pressing issues of our day.

Session 04: The Fall: Fractures in Everything
Christians believe that humanity, created pure and righteous, fell from grace. In an act of cataclysmic disobedience, Adam and Eve defied God’s command and redefined Creation. In this session, we will explore the fractures brought on by their rebellion…and ours.

Session 05: Salvation: Celebrating the Righteousness of God
What do we mean when we say “salvation”? In this session, we will explore the purpose of God’s saving work and the elements that make up this wonderful word. And we will see how a deeper grasp of this doctrine opens up a deeper experience of life-defining gratitude!

Session 06: The Return: Justice and Peace
In the doctrine of Christ’s Return, we proclaim astounding things. One day, Christ will return in judgment, bringing peace and a whole new existence. How does the doctrine of Christ’s Return impact our understanding of the world we live in today? How does it help us discern between legitimate acts of righteousness and humanism? How does it offer amazing hope and frightening warning?
