Take time to view these presentations and I am confident you will have get a better grasp on the role of the church in this generation. You will also be invited to ask some hard questions about the methods and theological underpinnings of the “Emergent Church” movement. At the end of the day, these videos will call you to a new place of commitment to Jesus and love for His Bride, the Church.
–Rev. Dr. Kevin G. Harney; author of Leadership from the Inside Out
Adam has been a friend of mine for several years. I trust his analysis and know his heart for Jesus Christ and the church. He is a thoughtful, winsome, well-read, and down-to earth communicator. All of these qualities are evident in this fine teaching series. The Church in Emerging Culture will help churches and Christians make better sense of our time and discern truth from error in contemporary movements and conversations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
What is the “emerging Church” and what does it have to do with you? In this class, we will examine key transitions in American culture and how the Church is responding. In particular, we will explore and evaluate influential voices in Christian publishing and pastoral leadership. As our culture continues to change at the speed of light, how can the Church be a “light on a hill”? Throughout Church history, believers have faced the challenge to communicate the Gospel in their cultural context. Now, more than ever, we are called to do so with Truth and Love!
Session 01–Identity Crisis
In this session, we will examine how the evangelical community stands at a crossroads. As our culture has increasingly entered into its “post-Christian” phase, the Church in North America is faced with an identity crisis. Who we will be in the coming century may well be determined in the next decade.
Session 02–The Emergent Mystique
In this session, we will examine the “emerging church” phenomenon. Since the late 1990s, this “conversation” has been exerting more influence in the greater evangelical world. What are the features of this movement? Who are the leaders? How is it affecting the Church in North America?
Session 03–Once for All?: The Place of Doctrine in the Emerging Conversation (1 of 2)
Throughout Church history, doctrine has brought unity and division. What is the place of doctrine? Is it important? Can doctrine be permanent, or should it be ever-changing? Should it divide? How does doctrine define the limits of unity? In this session, we will explore the biblical doctrine of doctrine and we will listen to what the emergent church is saying about the issue.
Session 04–Once for All?: The Place of Doctrine in the Emerging Conversation (2 of 2)
Session 05–God Breathed: The Place of Scripture in the Emerging Conversation (1 of 2)
In this session, we will explore the biblical doctrine of the Bible. What does Scripture teach about itself? And what does the emergent church have to say about Scripture? Are the many voices in the emergent movement pointing in the same direction when it comes to the Bible?
Session 06–God Breathed: The Place of Scripture in the Emerging Conversation (2 of 2)
Session 07–Good News? The Gospel in the Emergent Conversation (1 of 2)
In this session, we will examine what Scripture has to say about the Good News. For centuries, the Church has taught that when Jesus died on the Cross, he received the punishment we deserved and gave us the righteousness he embodied. Faith in God’s saving work through Christ fundamentally changes our relationship with God. What do some in the emergent church have to say about this? In session 7 and 8, we deal specifically with Rob Bell’s new talk, “The Gods Aren’t Angry.”
Session 08–Good News? The Gospel in the Emergent Conversation (2 of 2)
Session 09–Five Questions for Emergents
In this session, we will pose five questions for the emergent “conversation:” 1) Is Your Conversation Pastorally Sensitive?; 2) Is Your Conversation Culturally Relevant?; 3) Is Your Conversation Historically Informed?; 4) Is Your Conversation Biblically Faithful?; 5) Is Your Conversation Humbly Reverent?
